"The Lord's Prayer" first appeared on the Convoy EP (2005) and then again on 2008's compilation album Rocks Would Cry Out. The original recording has always been a favorite of mine. The whole song was the result of one "happy accident" after another.
If the original master had been available, I may have even decided to simply re-mix and master the old track but, alas, the old files had disappeared.
Instead, I set out to try and capture what I loved about the old recording but in a more modern and repeatable way.
Musically, this song is one of the more original sounding songs on the album. It vamps and meanders in almost a stream-of-consiousness sort of way. It's vast and dreamy and ignores all the rules of songwriting, yet is somehow still singable.
I was thrilled to be able to bring back most of the original crew from the original with the notable additions of Rachel Gauthier's haunting vocals and Jon Enns taking over for Travis Goode on the drums.
Lyrically, this is a loose adaptation of the Lord's Prayer. I feel weird taking credit for the lyrics on this.
lyrics
THE LORD”S PRAYER
by Jeremy Hartshorn (and Jesus of course)
Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name
Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth
As it is in Heaven
As it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread -
Nothing more and nothing less than we need
All we need is You
All we need is You, You
Forgive our sins as we forgive those
who’ve sinned against us
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
Deliver us ,
Deliver us
Deliver us from evil
